Do you want to work in childcare?

Find out where to start in setting up a childcare provision, including nurseries, pre-schools, childminding, home childcare, or an out of school provision including holiday clubs.

Childminders

A childminder looks after young children in your own home, and you must be registered with Ofsted.

You can find out about the steps needed in order to register by visiting the Childminding pages on the B&NES council website.

If you are interested in becoming a childminder and would like to chat to a member of the Childminding team in B&NES, you can contact them by emailing early_years@bathnes.gov.uk.

Home Childcarers

A home childcarer or nanny looks after children in the child's home. You don't need to register with Ofsted, but you might want to if you plan on taking childcare vouchers.

You can find out more about becoming a home childcarer by visiting gov.uk's page on 'registering as a nanny'

Register as an early years setting

Early years settings can care for a number of children aged from a few weeks right up until they begin school.

If you would like to find out more about registering as an early years setting you can find further information on the B&NES pages 'how to set up as an early years or childcare business'

If you are interested in setting up an early years setting and would like to chat to a member of the Early Years team in B&NES, you can contact them by emailing early_years@bathnes.gov.uk.

Out of School Provision, including holiday clubs

Setting up an out of school provision, including a holiday club, can sometimes mean a different process to those highlighted above. For example, not all out of school provision needs to be Ofsted registered, although it is often considered good practice to join Ofsted's voluntary register.

It's important to note there are clear and strict guidelines about when you must register with Ofsted, and also the requirements on you as a provider to run clearly focussed and adult led activities if you are not legally required to register.

The Out of School Alliance have provided a helpful step by step summary on their page about setting up an activity club, and outline when it is necessary to register with Ofsted. You can also find the full legal requirements about registering a childcare provision on the Gov.uk website with regards to when you must register with Ofsted or a childminder agency, when you cannot register, and when you do not have to. This information can be found on their registration exemptions information page.
