About
Our office is based in Radstock, but our service is far reaching across the district of BANES and beyond. Our volunteers are spread across the area to help people in their local communities combatting loneliness and isolation and providing essential, cost effective and friendly transport. In an average year our drivers provide at least 5,000 journeys across BANES and a few beyond.
We serve many organisations to get people to the places where they can access the services they need. We do not require passengers to become ‘members’, however, to be eligible for our services, we do require passengers to be a BANES resident. We also prioritise passengers with a low-income/savings (under £20,000). Where availability allows, we do sometimes support those who do not meet this low-income criterion (including those referred to us by Dial-a-Ride and other similar services), but our priority is always our low-income passengers.
SWAN does not have any wheelchair accessible vehicles, but can take folding chairs/walking aids. We ask passengers for a donation for their journey based on their total mileage, which comes to a lot less than the cost of a traditional taxi; this helps us to reimbues our volunteers their mileage costs.
We operate independently to deliver our services but work closely with many local organisations to ensure we help in the most meaningful and effective ways.
SWAN is also active within key local networks and forums, ensuring we stay fully up to date with local need, news, and changes, and can also contribute our own knowledge and best practice.
