Fun Science
Science based alternative provision for children aged 5-13. 1:1 or small group practical science sessions for children with ASD, ADHD, trauma backgrounds and global delay. We are able to travel to your home or school within the B&NES area.
We run child-led science sessions for either one hour or two hours, once or twice a week. We work on either a 1:1 basis or with a small group of up to 5 pupils. We guide the child through a range of science experiments and help them to develop their working scientifically skills. As well as teaching science topics appropriate to the pupil's school year (and often beyond) we also focus on their interests and passions. We build the following skills into our sessions as needed:
- Listening to adult instructions
- Assessing and managing risk
- Fine motor skills
- Focusing for increasing amounts of time
- Reading, writing and related skills
- Being careful with equipment
- Maths skills including measuring, drawing graphs and tables, calculating means etc.
With any new pupil, we create a set of goals for them that is partially made up of the national curriculum science knowledge and working scientifically skills for their age but also their emotional, behavioural and social goals. We then plan sessions that appeal to their interests but which also work towards these goals. We record the skills that have been gained in each session.
All children accessing our service should improve their confidence and enthusiasm for learning, their working scientifically skills and also their own personal goals whether those are behavioural (e.g. managing risk, listening to adult instructions, taking care of equipment), social (e.g. working as part of a group, being able to ask an adult for help, being kind to others), emotional (e.g. coping when things go wrong, having a positive attitude towards learning, being able to cope with changes) or more general (e.g. improving basic maths skills, learning to draw a graph).
Everything we do is bespoke for each learner. We are able to adjust all topics to fit in with their interests but also we can adapt everything to the pupils needs for example avoiding smelly items for a pupil with sensitivity to these things, using lots of interesting to touch items for a sensory-seeking child or making sure there is no touching for a sensory-avoiding child.
None of our sessions involve loud noises and children know exactly what is going to happen in all experiments before it happens. Children do not have to write anything but are encouraged to do as much writing as they feel able to do and can dictate their answers or type them if that is easier for them. They may prefer to draw their answers rather than write them and that is ok too.
All our sessions are geared around the goals identified for the child and a large part of this is the goals taken from their EHCP. We record the goals that have been achieved as we go along and will work with commissioners to create new goals when appropriate.
We can travel to any home or school within the B&NES area.
Price is £80+VAT for a one hour session or £130+VAT for a two hour session.
