About
Specialist residential neurorehabilitation
In 1985 we started the UK’s first paediatric brain injury rehabilitation service and today we run the country’s largest service of its kind.
Set in 24-acres of beautiful woodland at our national specialist centre in Tadworth, Surrey, we offer longer term placements as well as overnight stays in comfortable, fully-accessible bedrooms, available seven days a week.
With facilities including sensory gardens, a nature trail, a wheelchair-accessible tree house, as well as an outdoor basketball court and playground, our tailored packages offer breaks for children and young people, and much needed rest time for their families.
During their stay, children enjoy a variety of fun leisure activities, facilities and outings, and also have access to on-site daily school sessions during term-time. In addition, we also offer a range of activities including arts and crafts, themed weeks, and group and individual activities.
As one of the only services which can provide the most complex rehabilitation to children and young people (CYP) with acquired brain injury outside of a hospital setting, our work sees us support CYP aged 0 – 18 from right across the UK.
We are able to support CYP from a wide geographical area who:
- have complex disabilities and health needs
- are vulnerable to acute changes in health which necessitates 24-hour care
- have complex needs which require them to be managed by a carer or nurse
Our flexible services reflect the range of abilities and needs of children with brain injuries; from those who are minimally conscious to those who appear to have made a full physical recovery but are left with ‘hidden’ challenges with their cognition, memory, communication and behaviour. However, due to the vulnerability of children at The Children's Trust we are unable to accommodate children with severe challenging behaviour, but, we may be able to suggest alternative placements.
Our services aim to:
- maximise each child’s potential
- restore lost skills where possible, develop new skills and provide compensatory approaches as needed
- facilitate new learning beyond the end of the child’s natural recovery period
- develop an understanding of the child’s strengths and needs
- ensure the child’s home environment is modified for the way they will function after their brain injury
- prevent secondary problems such as joint contractures developing and promote postural care
Neurorehabilitation programmes at The Children’s Trust are flexible and adapt to the needs of each child. Our multidisciplinary team offers an integrated approach to assessment and treatment. We combine medical care, therapy, education, play and family support to help children achieve their goals and maximise their ability to participate in family life and education when they go home.
Transitional Care services
We offer care placements supporting the transition from hospital to home for medically-stable children and young people aged 0-18 with complex health needs. These placements typically follow surgical procedures, prolonged stays in intensive care units or where the child might be staying in hospital due to discharge barriers.
Our Placements Team work closely with a number of parties including integrated care boards (ICBs), local authority social care teams and private funders to discuss suitability and availability of a short breaks placement.
