School age childcare

Use this page to find out about childcare for children aged 4 to 16 before school, after school and during school holidays

If you are a parent of a child aged 4 to 16 years, there is a range of childcare options available. This includes breakfast and after-school clubs, sometimes called wraparound childcare, as well as holiday childcare during school breaks.

Breakfast clubs

Breakfast clubs provide childcare before the school day starts. They give children a safe and welcoming place to begin the day.

Many clubs open from 7.30am. This can help you drop your child off before the usual school start time.

Children usually get a healthy breakfast and can take part in calm activities before lessons begin. Some schools offer free breakfast clubs. Others charge a fee, which usually includes breakfast and childcare. Some schools are also joining the Department for Education’s Free Breakfast Clubs programme.

After-school clubs

After-school clubs provide childcare at the end of the school day. They give children a safe, supervised place to relax, spend time with friends and take part in activities.

Activities may include arts and crafts, sports, games, outdoor play, music, cooking and homework support. After-school clubs are a paid childcare service. Fees vary between settings, and some clubs include a snack. Some clubs stay open until 6pm, helping parents and carers balance work and family commitments.
